Workers have right to choose their own Trade Union reps - Imelda Munster TD
Louth TD Imelda Munster has given her backing to the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) members in the National Ambulance Service (NAS) who mounted pickets at Louth County Hospital on Monday in pursuit of their right to be represented by the union of their choice.
Teachta Munster called on the HSE to open a dialogue with the PNA membership to agree a resolution of the conditions that led to Monday’s strike and pickets at hospitals across the state.
The Louth TD said:
“Sinn Féin supports the right of all workers to be members of a trade union and to be able to nominate a union of their choice to represent them in negotiations with management over wages and work conditions.
"It is unacceptable that any employer would presume to be able to dictate to a worker which union should represent their interests. No employer should have a veto over the right of workers to choose their representatives.
"The HSE should agree to enter urgent and meaningful discussions with PNA officials to end this dispute.
"Myself and party colleague David Cullinane TD have tabled a Bill in the Dáil – The Trade Union Representation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2018 – which would outlaw any effort by employers to deny a worker his or her right to be represented by their union”.
