Government must accept passage of Occupied Territories Bill – Mary Lou McDonald
The Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald has called on the government to facilitate the passage of the Occupied Territories Bill through all stages in the Oireachtas.
McDonald made the call following the passage of the Bill at second stage in the Dáil.
The Sinn Féin President said:
“I was proud to give my support, and that of my party, to the Occupied Territories Bill which will prohibit the import and sale of goods, services and natural resources originating in illegal settlements in occupied territories in Palestine
“It is now crucial that the government does not block this important piece of legislation. It must be allowed to proceed through all stages in the Oireachtas – The Dáil has spoken.
“The people of Palestine look to Ireland for support. They do so because our nation is no stranger to colonialization and to conflict and they expect us to stand by them. This Bill is reasonable and right.
“I am calling on the government to do the right thing – drop their opposition to this Bill and allow its progression through the Oireachtas.”
