'RTÉ should reconsider competition block' - Ó Donnghaile
Sinn Fein Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has urged RTÉ to reflect on their recent decision to exclude audience members from the Six Counties in premium competitions provided by the broadcaster.
Speaking after discussing the issue on RTÉ’s ‘Sean O’Rourke Show’ this morning Senator Ó Donnghaile said;
“RTÉ is a staple of Irish audiences in Belfast as much as it is in Dublin, in Derry as much as it is in Kerry.
“The recent decision to make premium competitions by the broadcaster open to participants in the 26 Counties only has been met with dismay and disappointment.
“RTÉ have a duty to reflect audiences right across Ireland, but time and time again they have proven out of step with viewers in the northern part of our country.
“People were rightly annoyed when they displayed an amputated ‘map of Ireland’ and geo-blocked the Sunday Game, but from this decision, they clearly haven’t learned any lessons.
“While RTÉ cite legislation in the North as the reason for their decision, it immediately begs the question ‘why now? Why not before?’
“The leadership at RTÉ should reflect on what many see as pattern of snubs towards northern audiences and live up to the obligations set by their own Charter to reflect and serve audiences across the whole of Ireland.”
