Sinn Féin comments on Chief Constable’s decision to stand down
Commenting on the decision by PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton to resign in June this year at the end of his contract and not to take up the offer of a three-year extension by the Policing Board Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said:
“We understand that George Hamilton is stepping down for personal reasons and I wish him and all his family the best in the future.
“Sinn Féin supported George Hamilton’s appointment as Chief Constable of the PSNI on the basis of his publicly stated belief in and commitment to policing with the community as the basis for modern policing.
“While we have had at times differences of opinion with the Chief Constable on matters of policy and operational decisions, he was accessible to accountability and to listen to criticism and was prepared to engage and outreach to all sections of the community.
“Whoever replaces him as Chief Constable will have to face huge challenges especially around the issues in delivering community confidence in policing, legacy and Brexit.”
