Boylan welcomes recycling initiative
Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed an initiative from supermarket chain Iceland which will reward people for recycling their soft drink bottles.
Speaking after it was confirmed that Iceland has chosen the Park Centre store to extend the trial which will see a 10p store voucher being paid out for every store stocked plastic bottle, the party’s Energy, Environment & Climate Change spokesperson said:
“This initiative from Iceland is a welcome step in the fight against plastic pollution and should be an incentive for other stores and manufacturers to get involved in tackling this human made problem.
“The electronic bottle bank will scan the bottle’s barcode and pay out a 10p store voucher on every bottle but will reject any containing liquid or plastic bottles containing products not stocked by the supermarket.
“Since the project began last year, the store has taken in 310,000 bottles and paid out £30,000 in vouchers across six stores.
“With over 10 million tonnes of plastic waste leaking into our oceans each year, we are reaching a critical point.
“We all have a responsibility to make the right choice and move to renewable alternatives that will help drive the fight against plastic pollution.”
