Sinn Féin welcomes visit by Carles Puigdemont to Leinster House - Senator Paul Gavan

29 January, 2019 - by Paul Gavan

Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan, Chairperson of the Oireachtas Friends of Catalonia Group, today welcomed Mr Carles Puigdemont’s visit to Leinster House.

Mr Puigdemont, former President of Catalonia, was a guest of the Oireachtas Friends of Catalonia group and delivered a presentation to a cross-party audience.

Speaking today, Senator Gavan said:

“We are delighted to welcome the visit of Mr Puigdemont and Catalan Minister, Jordi Puigneró to the Irish parliament.

“Mr. Puigdemont was the President of Catalonia for the famous 1st of October 2017 independence referendum.

"Over 2 million Catalans voted in this referendum despite the Spanish government’s attempts to disrupt it, including the awful scenes we saw of Spanish police attacking polling stations and voters.

“It is important that Members of the Oireachtas get a chance to hear from and meet with Mr. Puigdemont and other Catalan politicians who are being prosecuted for simply arranging a democratic referendum.

“The Spanish Government must enter into meaningful dialogue with the Catalan Government to find a political solution.

"It needs to stop using the police and the legal system to attack the Catalan independence movement, which is a legitimate political demand.”
