Those responsible for Children’s Hospital overspend cannot be protected by investigation – O’Reilly

1 February, 2019 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Speaking this afternoon, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD has called the published terms of reference for the independent review into the rising costs of the National Children’s Hospital “outrageous” as they will stop short of determining culpability at an individual level.

Teachta O’Reilly TD stated:

“The overrun at the National Children’s Hospital has been a catastrophic failure to date and people are demanding that we find out why it happened, how it happened, and who is responsible.

“Therefore, it beggars belief that the government have essentially instructed those who are conducting the independent review into the rising costs of the National Children’s Hospital to stop short of determining culpability at individual level via the terms of reference they have drafted for the investigation.

“Quite frankly this is outrageous, nobody should be above scrutiny when it comes to the investigation into Children’s Hospital overspend, including all who were Minister’s for Health during the lifetime of this project, as well as Ministers for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform.

“Those responsible have to be identified and there has to be consequences, if not this review is just another government whitewash.

“We have a situation where on one hand the government are out to protect their own for their failures regarding the overrun on the National Children’s Hospital while on the other hand they are threatening to sanction nurses and cut their pay – this stinks to the high heavens.

“The terms of reference for the review into the overrun at the Children’s Hospital must be re-written and those investigating this matter must have the freedom and independence to carry out their investigations and they must be able to determine culpability, regardless of whose door that leads them to.”
