Another damning report on lack of transparency in the EU - Lynn Boylan MEP

6 February, 2019 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has commended Corporate Europe Observatory for their comprehensive report into corporate lobbying at the EU Council.

The EU Council is where Ministers from the Member States put forward their positions on EU legislation.

Ms Boylan said;

"The timing of this report on corporate lobbying is particularly apt, given the ridiculous situation we had last week with Fine Gael’s political group, EPP insisting on a secret ballot on lobbying transparency amendments.

"If we want people to trust the institutions legislating on issues that directly impact on their lives, then they deserve to know who their elected representatives are meeting.

"This Corporate Europe Observatory report highlights serious systemic problems in the EU on lobbying transparency.  Brussels is the second most lobby-dense city in the world after Washington DC.

"While there are lobby registers, albeit imperfect for the Parliament and the Commission, the EU Council is a complete black box, with secret voting and no public access to documents.

"For example, we have no way of knowing what amendments Ireland submitted to major pieces of legislation, all we can do is guess from their press statements.

"Corporate lobbying easily exploits this secrecy, circumventing public scrutiny.  The impacts of this highly organized, highly financed lobbying has a direct impact on ordinary people.  It weakens our environmental laws, creates loopholes and erodes workers rights.

"Sinn Féin has always been highly critical of the lack of transparency across all EU institutions but the level of secrecy at the Council level is on a whole other level.

"It is a Corporate hangout space where decisions are made that have major ramifications on all our lives. The time for reform of the EU Institutions is now."
