Sinn Féin meet Ambulance Service over Omagh and Western Trust cover
Sinn Fein MLA Colm Gildernew and MP Orfhlaith Begley have met with the Chief Executive of the Ambulance Service Michael Bloomfield to discuss concerns over ambulance cover in the Western Trust area.
Commenting after the meeting, the Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA said: "Today we raised our concerns over the often low level of ambulance cover in the Omagh and wider Western Trust area.
"At times over the Christmas period ambulance cover was as low as 60% of what it should have been.
"We emphasised the importance of prompt response times to emergency calls in the Western Trust and in rural areas generally.
"There is no doubt that a huge effort made every day by ambulance staff to deliver vital front-line and often emergency care to the public in what are very challenging situations.
"Mr Bloomfield informed us that newly trained paramedics will be returning to the service in the coming months to fill a number of vacancies in the system.
"Significant investment in the workforce, and in the ambulance fleet is vital if the needs of the community are to be met.
"Sinn Féin stated this clearly in our submission to the Ambulance Service consultation recently, and we restated the need for investment again here today."
