'DUP ignoring constituents to chase Brexit fantasy' - Ó Muilleoir

7 February, 2019 - by Máirtín Ó Muilleoir

Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has accused the DUP of prioritising a fantasy Brexit over the interests of their constituents.

The South Belfast MLA was commenting after DUP MLA Jim Wells told the media that the party did not consider the dire impacts of Brexit on communities in the north before deciding to campaign for it.

“It’s quite clear that the DUP gave no consideration to the disastrous impact that Brexit would have on citizens in the north," Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said.

“Alongside their allies in the Tories, they have displayed arrogance and a complete disregard for our peace process and democracy.

“A majority of people in the north, including many from unionist communities, voted to remain within the EU.

“There is no good Brexit for Ireland, north or south. The reckless position of the DUP and Tory Brexiteers seeks to plunge our economy over a cliff and erect a hard border on our island.

“Rather than protecting the interests of their constituents, farmers, businesses, workers and students – the DUP have prioritised a right wing fantasy Brexit agenda.”
