Committee report highlights serious concerns on impact of Brexit on Housing sector - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has commented on the launch of the Housing Committee’s report examining the potential impacts of Brexit on the Housing market in this State.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Ó Broin said:
“This Committee report highlights concerns about the lack of contingency planning regarding the potential impacts of Brexit on the housing sector.
“The Housing Committee organised a series of hearing on the issue, where we heard from a diverse group of stakeholders including the ESRI, NERI, Property Industry Ireland and the Department of Housing.
“Their evidence fed into the fourteen recommendations of the report. A key recommendation included the Minister for Housing developing contingency plans to ensure the minimum level of disruption to construction material supply chains and cross border labour.
“During the hearings both the ESRI and NERI raised concerns about the impact Brexit may have on the demand for housing and the cost of the delivery of housing.
“For example, the ESRI stated that nearly 50% of imported plumbing and electrical fittings and prefabricated buildings are imported from Britain.
“It also told the Committee that approximately 30% of wood products used in the Irish construction sector are also imported from Britain.
“There are already issues with the lack of affordable supply and the cost of delivering new units, especially apartments in this State.
“It was worrying that during the Committee hearings there was a clear lack of contingency planning to mitigate the impact of Brexit on our already sluggish housing sector.
“It is my view that greater investment in public housing with higher targets for the delivery of social and affordable homes would greatly assist in reducing the negative impact of Brexit on housing supply."
