Good Friday Agreement rights must be protected - Anderson

7 February, 2019 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the rights of people in the north contained in the Good Friday Agreement must be protected from Brexit.

Martina Anderson said:

"There is no doubt that Brexit is disastrous for the rights of people in the north of Ireland.

"The latest proposal from the British Home Office to treat everyone in the north as British is at odds with the Good Friday Agreement guarantee that people in the north are entitled to chose their identity and nationality.

"This could create difficulties for family members of people born in the north who identify as Irish citizens when it comes to getting residency.

"The British parliament cannot be allowed to undermine and ride roughshod over the Good Friday Agreement.

"Since the Good Friday Agreement was signed, successive British Governments have ignored their obligation to amend citizenship laws for people in the north.

"The Irish government, as a co-guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement has a duty and a responsibility to defend the agreement and defend the rights of Irish citizens in the north in line with the Taoiseach's pledge that we will never be left behind again."
