Fianna Fáil must stop protecting Minister for Health – Mary Lou McDonald TD

8 February, 2019 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has challenged Fianna Fáil to “stop protecting the Minister for Health” with regards to the National Childrens’ Hospital spending overrun.

Teachta McDonald wrote to the Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin this morning asking him to make clear whether he has confidence in the Minister and if he will move or support a confidence motion in this regard.

The Sinn Féin President said:

“The Taoiseach has described budgetary concerns arising from the overspend as ‘red herrings’. The truth is that this overspend will impact on vital community health projects and other infrastructure which will now be delayed or cancelled as a consequence.

“What has been revealed amounts to failures of governance and accountability at all levels of government.

“An Taoiseach’s confidence in his Minister for Health and his claim that he acted correctly have no credibility.

“Sinn Féin has no confidence in Minister Harris. His position is untenable in the face of mounting crises in our health services. He must be removed from office.

“This morning I wrote to the Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin and challenged him to stop protecting Minister Harris by way of his confidence and supply arrangement.

“I urged Deputy Martin to refrain from using Brexit as an excuse to tolerate and enable bad government.

“Fianna Fáil must now make clear whether they have confidence in Minister Harris and if they will move or support a confidence motion in this regard.”
