Maskey welcomes High Court ruling on electoral challenge

11 February, 2019 - by Paul Maskey

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has welcomed a High Court ruling to allow a Belfast man to legally challenge Boundary Commission proposals for redrawing electoral constituencies.

The West Belfast MP said:“I welcome that the High Court has granted permission for a Belfast man to challenge the Boundary Commission’s flawed boundary proposals. “There has been widespread anger across the nationalist community at the radically revised proposals brought forward by the Boundary Commission which deviated so greatly from its original plans.“The new proposals were strikingly similar to a submission by the DUP in 2017 and the Commission failed to explain why it abandoned its own original proposals or to reveal the criteria it used then to bring forward its new plan.“Thousands of people across the north opposed these proposals in a public consultation but the Commission refused to make any substantial changes to the plan.“Electoral boundaries need to result in representation which is reflective of the electorate; they should take account of local geography, and also of community cohesion and identity.

"Hopefully, this court case can help bring us closer to that goal."
