Minister for health’s record “shambolic” – Mary Lou McDonald

12 February, 2019 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

The Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald has described the record of the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, as “shambolic”.

Addressing the Taoiseach in the Dáil Ms McDonald said that this record demands far more than an apology and called for him to be removed from his position.

The Sinn Féin President said:

“It is a democratic imperative that Ministers are held accountable by this Dáil, and that they can be removed by this Dáil if that is what it so decides. That is absolutely essential.

“The record of the Minister for Health is not a great one. It’s not even a good one. It is, truth be told, a shambolic one, which merits a motion in this Dáil and affords us an opportunity to assess the Minister’s record.

“Because whatever you might think Taoiseach, or whatever the Fianna Fáil leader might think, we have a prevailing crisis across the health service and it is crystal clear that the Minister for Health is utterly incapable of resolving the myriad of issues at hand.

“We have an overrun of €450 million of taxpayers’ money at the National Childrens’ Hospital and no one being held to account. Fianna Fáil may well be prepared to sit on their hands, do nothing and accept that. We won’t.

“We are told that the Minister for Health is to make an apology to the Dáil today. I want to put it to you Taoiseach that the Minister’s record demands a little bit more than an apology. The Minister must be removed from his position.”
