Prime Minister May’s speech offers no new solutions – Mary Lou McDonald

12 February, 2019 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Speaking in response to British Prime Minister Theresa May’s speech in Westminster today, the Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald said:

“The British Prime Minister has been travelling and meeting various groups and parties, but she clearly has not been listening.

“Her speech in Westminster today offered nothing new and put forward no new solutions.

“Prime Minister May’s clear priority is to appease and placate the DUP and hard-Brexiteers who are driving towards a catastrophic no deal crash.

“The backstop is an insurance policy. It is the bare minimum required to prevent a hard British border in Ireland.

“It is supported by the majority of citizens, businesses and other key sectors of our society and people. Any attempt to scrap the backstop must not be entertained. The Irish government, and the people north and south, support this approach.

“The EU has made it clear that the withdrawal agreement and the backstop cannot and will not be reopened or renegotiated.

“It is time for Prime Minister May to stand by the deal as agreed. Anything else would amount to little more than playing a game of chicken with Ireland’s interests.”
