Kearney calls for zero tolerance after latest Six Mile Water oil spill
Sinn Féin South Antrim MLA Declan Kearney has expressed serious concerns following the latest pollution incident in the Six Mile Water at Ballyclare.
Declan Kearney said:
“It is a disgrace that the Six Mile Water has suffered yet another oil spillage. This is the second in recent weeks, and the latest in a catalogue of similar spills in local rivers over recent years.
“This latest incident will have had a major impact on aquatic life and overall ecosystem along the river’s course from Ballyclare, through Templepatrick to Antrim.
“Incidents such as Monday’s spill at Ballyclare can cause very serious long lasting pollution from which our rivers take months and even years to recover.
“The resulting repercussions on fish populations; for the sport of angling; and the public’s enjoyment of these important local environmental assets and resources is huge.
“There is absolutely no excuse for spillage of fuel oil into our rivers, either accidental or intentional. I have previously called for zero tolerance by the community and relevant agencies towards pollution of our rivers and associated ecosystems.
“I repeat my call for strict legal enforcement and sanction to be applied in each and every case where offenders are detected and found guilty.”
