Sheehan challenges Trust on failure to provide evidence
Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has said the Belfast Trust’s failure to provide evidence to the Nursing and Midwifery Council reinforces the need for a public inquiry into serious care failings at Muckamore Abbey Hospital.
The party’s Health spokesperson and Colm Gildernew MLA attended an all-party meeting with the Belfast Trust today.
Pat Sheehan commented:
“We challenged the Belfast Trust on its failure to provide evidence to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
“There were clearly deficiencies in the process, that led to the suspension of a number of staff from Muckamore Abbey.
“Under normal circumstances this would be unacceptable, in this case however the distress of patients and families is being compounded by the failures that have taken place.
“The needs, interests and safety of patients, need to be at the heart of all actions carried out by the trust on Muckamore Abbey.”
Colm Gildernew added:
“We are still awaiting the long overdue and promised publication of the Serious Adverse Incident report. This is not acceptable and must be published as a matter of urgency.
“It is clear that while the SAI establishes some of what happened in Muckamore it does not address issues of Governance and accountability.
“The recent developments have reinforced the need for a public inquiry to get to the bottom of serious care failings at Muckamore Abbey Hospital.”
