Kurds must be able to vote free from interference - Molloy

19 February, 2019 - by Francie Molloy

Sinn Féin MP Francie Molloy has said the Kurdish people should be able to go to the polls free from interference and intimidation.

Speaking from Westminster, the Mid Ulster MP said:

"I met today with HDP MP for the Izmir province, Murat Çepni, in Westminster today to discuss concerns about Turkish state interference in local election campaigns.

"It is deeply concerning to hear from Murat reports of obstruction of political campaigning and interference in the electoral process.

"There have been accusations of violations of electoral rights and manipulation of ballot papers and registration forms.

"Concerns have also been raised that the Turkish state may not allow independent electoral observers to monitor the campaign, registration and voting process before and during the election.

"The democratic process has to be paramount. President Erdoğan has to recognise there is a peaceful democratic route available to resolve the conflict. There is nothing to fear from people voting.

"The mandate of the HDP must be respected and their activists, and everyone taking part in the election, must be allowed to to campaign without interference."
