Gildernew encourages public to register to vote
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has encouraged people to ensure they have registered to vote before the 12th April deadline.
Colm Gildernew said:
“Sinn Féin campaigned over many years for online voter registration and we welcomed when it was made available for people in the north in June last year.
“This system makes it easier for people to exercise their right to vote and 70 percent of applications of those registering to vote made this year were made online.
“As we approach the local government elections in May, it’s vital that the democratic deficit, created by the removal of tens of thousands of people from the electoral register, is addressed.
“The Electoral Office should also reinstate the school’s registration programme which has the potential to get 10,000 young people every year on to the electoral register.
“I would encourage people to use the online registration service on your smartphone, tablet or PC, it is available at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and the process only takes five minutes.”
