Sinn Féin to host round table meeting on Muckamore
Sinn Féin MLAs Pat Sheehan and Colm Gildernew will host a roundtable meeting with community and voluntary organisations on challenges of resettling those awaiting discharge at Muckamore Abbey Hospital.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Colm Gildernew said:
"We have consistently and directly raised concerns with the Belfast Trust on their failure to respond in an open and transparent way regarding failures in Muckamore.
"Families of vulnerable adults in Muckamore are entitled to the truth about what happened to them. We believe the only realistic way to achieve this is through a public inquiry.
"Moving forward it is important that Muckamore is fit for purpose and is put in a position to provide safe, effective and compassionate care to vulnerable adults in their care.
"We have raised concerns on whether the department's target to resettle those who remain in Muckamore Abbey, despite not requiring in-patient hospital care, is achievable by the end of 2019.
"The greatest challenge is finding the right placement and package of care for each resident. This needs to be person centered and sustainable, requiring sufficiently resourced community support services.
"Our roundtable event will involve and listen to those organisations delivering such support services in the community.
"The success of any resettlement will depend on the capacity of these organisations to provide the necessary support services to the families and carers of those within Muckamore Abbey Hospital.”
