Boylan calls on Fine Gael to condemn Viktor Orbán’s dangerous fake news campaign
Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has condemned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for consistently promoted a dangerous us vs them rhetoric in relation to refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. The most recent development in this dangerous campaign is a letter Orbán has sent to all Hungarian citizens which contains multiple falsehoods about EU asylum policy.
Reacting to the news from Brussels, Lynn Boylan said:
“This most recent move from Orbán sees him using far-right, anti-Semitic rhetoric, and blatant lies to whip up anti-immigrant sentiment ahead of the EU elections. Viktor Orbán is a member of the same European political group as Fine Gael, the European People’s party. It is worrying that a prime minister connected to the so-called centre-right group in the Parliament is openly using far-right rhetoric, anti-Semitic rhetoric, and making false claims about the EU encouraging immigration.
“The refugee crisis and Europe’s militarised response shows that, far from encouraging refugees or immigrants from coming to Europe, the EU has sought to prevent desperate people from seeking safety in Europe often with deadly consequences.
“I am calling on Fine Gael to publically distance themselves from their colleague Viktor Orbán’s comments and his ongoing campaign of spreading fake news. It is unacceptable that Fine Gael and the EPP continue to tolerate Orbán’s far-right fake news.”
