Broadband overspend another major scandal - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty revelations in the Dáil today that the National Broadband Plan will cost ‘multiples’ of the original cost is a damning indictment of Fine Gael’s management of the public finances.
Teachta Doherty said once again a vital piece of public infrastructure has gone way over budget and has been left at the mercy of a contractor.
Speaking today Teachta Doherty said;
“The admission by the Taoiseach today that the cost of the National Broadband Plan will cost multiples of the original cost is no small thing. It comes on the back of the news of the major overspend at the National Children’s Hospital.
“With an original estimated cost for the National Broadband plan of €500million we are not talking about a small overspend on this project. We are talking about a similar or worse overspend than what we have seen so far at the National Children’s Hospital.
“This is the result of another botched tendering process. We now have just one bidder for the contract leaving the government, and in turn, the taxpayer, in an extremely vulnerable position.
“This overspend could run in to billions rather than millions of euros.
“This is a damning indictment of Fine Gael’s management of the public finances and we need to get to the bottom of how this happened.
“Ordinary taxpayers are looking on in dismay as this government squanders their hard earned cash.
“Once again a vital piece of infrastructure, which is desperately needed in much of rural Ireland, has been left at the mercy of a contractor with costs escalating through the roof.
“That is simply not good enough. The Irish public deserve better.”
