Marketing Irish beef as premium product "well overdue" - Martin Kenny TD
Sinn Féin’s spokesman on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has welcomed reports of plans by An Bord Bía to market Irish beef as a premium product.
Deputy Kenny said:
“This is overdue. It is a suggestion I have been making for years and I know that it will be a success if it is done properly. Irish beef is clean and green: grass-fed, free-roaming and top quality.
"It is a disgrace that Irish farmers are only getting an average EU price for this product.
“There is huge potential in the European market for this high quality product. I see now that An Bord Bía is engaging a research company to study the concept.
“While good market research is always a good idea, I hope this is not going to be a costly delay in starting to publicise the quality of Irish beef.
“There is an increasing market for clean, green food and without any market research, anyone who has eaten beef in other parts of the world can testify to the quality and flavour of Irish meat.
“The main issue, however, is that the Irish farmer gets the price due for the product and that this is not just another channel for exorbitant mark-up for the many middlemen who exist between field and fork.
“Our search for new markets post-Brexit could end with the high-end food consumer in countries such as France, Belgium, Germany and Holland.”
