Fine Gael failing to prepare Irish economy for a changing world - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin’s Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has today accused the Fine Gael government, alongside supporters in Fianna Fáil, of refusing to prepare Ireland for the economic challenges that lie ahead.
The Donegal TD was speaking following the publication of the European Commission’s ‘Country Specific Report’ which contains many damning verdicts of government policy failure.
Teachta Doherty said:
“We have been witness to any amount of examples of this government’s complete inability to get a handle on the public finances.
“But the biggest risk presented by Fine Gael is their utter refusal to prepare the Irish economy for the future.
“Today the European Commission has pointed to the challenges which receive much attention in the Irish press – continued growth of mass homelessness, failure to address the corporate tax bubble, and poor management of the public finances.
“But they have also made note of the deep future risks which Fine Gael refuse to address, because the solution runs against their right-wing government agenda.
“There has been an abject failure in reducing emissions to fight climate change, wealth inequality is set to grow over the long term, and deep underinvestment in Research and Development which stifles our potential and has seen small businesses suffer from a widening productivity gap with multinationals.
“All of this is jeopardising our long-term economic interests. Instead of delivering policies that would put Ireland at the forefront of a changing world, Fine Gael are wedded to short term, on the hoof policy in the interest of the wealthiest in Irish society.”
