RTÉ must resolve bogus self-employment mess it created - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for workers’ rights David Cullinane today called on RTÉ to stop its foot-dragging on the Eversheds report and settle with the contractors who were found to be in direct employment with the State broadcaster, saying this issue has gone on long enough at this stage.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"Reports that workers at RTÉ who were on bogus self-employment contracts are having their claims dragged out by RTÉ is deeply worrying.
"The Eversheds report last June found that some 106 contractors at RTÉ were effectively directly employed, and as such they should have contracts and work and pay conditions reflective of this reality.
"RTÉ accepted the findings, yet has been dragging its feet in terms of compensation and retrospective payments.
"If RTÉ caused the problem they should resolve it, including retrospective payments if need be.
"Some of these workers have been battling this issue for years.
"It is unacceptable that RTÉ refuses to even discuss back-pay for something they, not the workers, created.
"Bogus self-employment is never acceptable, nor is it the fault of workers that they end up on this contracts.
"RTÉ needs to accept the findings of Eversheds and resolve this issue once and for all.
"It is something that the Public Accounts Committee has discussed before, and if it be RTÉ should reappear before the Committee to explain why this is still an issue."
