Pat Buckley TD calls for cross-party support for new Mental Health Committee

4 March, 2019 - by Pat Buckley TD

Sinn Fein Mental Health spokesperson Pat Buckley has called upon the government to re-establish the Mental Health Committee so that it can continue it work following the publication of a report in late 2018.

The Cork East TD made his comments after circulating a request to all former members to sign a joint statement requesting that the Committee be reformed without delay.
Deputy Buckley said;

“The Oireachtas Committee on Mental Health over more than a year carried out a great deal of work investigating the services in the place, identifying problems and potential solutions as well as holding the HSE, the Department and the government to account.
"The Committee was dissolved in October 2018 following the publication of its final report. In truth this was only the beginning of the Committees work.

"We have been waiting for the Minister to address the future of the Committee and were disappointed by recent comments from Minister Catherine Byrne to my colleague Sinn Féin Senator Máire Devine. We will wait no longer.
"In the context of continuing crisis in our mental health services, failure to implement the Vision for Change strategy and the plans to introduce a new Mental health Act, the committees role could not be more important.
"The Committee must also take responsibility for holding the government to account in acting on the many recommendations it made in its report of October 2018
"I am calling on all former committee members to sign a joint statement requesting the re-establishment of the Mental Health Committee without delay.”
