Sinn Féin bid to fly Pride flag at Belfast City Hall

4 March, 2019 - by Mary Ellen Campbell

Sinn Féin will put forward a motion at tonight’s monthly meeting of Belfast City Council calling for the Rainbow flag to be flown from Belfast City Hall on Saturday 3rd August 2019, the date of the annual Belfast Pride Parade through the city centre.

The motion will be proposed by Sinn Féin North Belfast Councillor Mary Ellen Campbell and seconded by Lagmore Sinn Féin Councillor Danny Baker.

Mary Ellen Campbell said:

“Our LGBTQ+ citizens make a huge positive contribution to the city of Belfast.

“This motion builds on the support shown by Belfast City Council to the annual Belfast Pride parade and is a show of solidarity from the city council to the LGBTQ+ community.

“The LGBTQ+ community deserves full recognition and implementation of their rights, including the right of marriage equality which is available everywhere else on these islands.

“Last year saw the largest ever Pride parades in Belfast, lined with businesses and organisations displaying banners and floats representing the high level of diversity that exists in Belfast and across society.

“I hope that all parties and councillors can give their full support to this motion and show that they too fully support equal rights for all our LGBTQ+ citizens.”
