Democratic rights of citizens in the north being failed by Fine Gael – David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin's David Cullinane TD has said that Fine Gael have failed to protect the fundamental democratic rights of Irish citizens in the north.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"The Irish government had an opportunity to guarantee the people of the north would be able exercise their fundamental right to elect a representative to the European Parliament, and they have failed to do so.
"It could have allocated its additional two seats to the north; independent legal advice proved there was no legal or constitutional barrier to doing that.
“What was required was political will, and Fine Gael was found wanting.
"Irish citizens in the north will remain EU citizens post-Brexit and should be able to access their democratic right to chose their representatives in the European Parliament, but the British government is taking this right away.
“Fine Gael had the chance to do something about that in line with its pledge that the people of the north will never be left behind again, but they have failed miserably."
