Beattie calls for DUP to take action following offensive leaflet
Sinn Féin councillor Ciaran Beattie has called on the DUP leadership to take disciplinary action against a South Belfast councillor responsible for a controversial and offensive leaflet.
Councillor Beattie said:
“This leaflet from a DUP councillor and election candidate in south Belfast is disgraceful and has caused widespread offence.
“It contains offensive language which should be rejected by all right-thinking people.
“South Belfast is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse areas of the north and I and many others celebrate that diversity and the positive contribution it makes to the life of our city.
“There is an onus on the DUP leadership not alone to distance themselves from this offensive leaflet but to take disciplinary action against the councillor responsible to demonstrate to the public that the sentiments in this leaflet are unacceptable. It is simply not good enough for the DUP to say yet again that its party officer board will look at this in an effort to create the space for inaction against the representative involved.
“There can be no place in our society for racism, sectarianism or discrimination and they must be challenged wherever they arise.”
