Sheehan welcomes new cancer strategy

8 March, 2019 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin’s heath spokesperson Pat Sheehan MLA has welcomed confirmation that a new cancer strategy is to be developed for the North.

Responding to an announcement from the Department of Health, the West Belfast MLA said:

“Sinn Féin has been calling on the Department of Health to progress a cancer strategy.

"As Minister Michelle O'Neill tasked officials to engage with the cancer sector to explore possibilities for a strategy moving forward.

"While this decision by the Permanent Secretary of Health to introduce a strategy is long overdue, it is to be welcomed.

“Currently cancer services are facing considerable challenges in delivering services in the context of waiting time targets being routinely missed and growing pressures on the workforce.

"Challenges are particularly stark in the context of Brexit with the Royal College of Radiologists recently warning that cancer treatment could be delayed.

"This would have a significant impact on patients relying on cancer services, and their families and carers.

“It is important that cancer services and the future strategy is co-designed and co-produced with patients, cancer charities, health and social care staff and professional bodies as well as other key stakeholders.

"This will be essential to ensuring a sustainable cancer service that delivers better health outcomes for patients.”
