Significant investment needed in Neurology Services – Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

11 March, 2019 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

National Brain Awareness Week is taking place this week running from March 11th until 17th.

Recognising the importance of this awareness raising week, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Disability Rights Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said;

“Neurological Services in Ireland require significant investment in order to address the current chronic under resourcing of supports and services which have led to extensive waiting lists throughout the State.

“We need a realistic allocation of resources in therapeutic, social, vocational and community supports for persons with neurological disorders across Ireland.

“Our Government has neglected this area of care over a significant period of time and it has a deep impact on individuals and their families who are in crisis all over the country languishing on waiting lists seeking access to adequate care and services.

“Persons with neurological disorders deserve to get access to the best level of care that can allow them to live independently and have autonomy over the choices they make in life.

“In our 2019 alternative budget submission, Sinn Féin called on the Government to introduce one additional Neurological Rehab team which would go some way to addressing the extensive waiting lists which exist.

"Much more is required but this would have been a starting point. This call was not listened to.

“In this National Brain Awareness week, I wish to send that message to the Government once again and to forward my best wishes to all those throughout Ireland suffering with neurological disorders.

"To their families and to all the advocacy groups who do fantastic work on their behalf, I say, molaim sibh, well done.”
