Sinn Féin President updates Friends of Ireland Caucus
The Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald was in Washington today for a series of meetings at Capitol Hill and updating Irish Americans on Brexit and the growing demand for Irish Unity.
Speaking following a meeting with the Friends of Ireland Caucus Ms McDonald said:
“American political leaders were central in securing the Good Friday Agreement. Without the influence, goodwill and support of Irish America and political leaders there would be no agreements.
“Today I updated the Congressional Friends of Ireland Caucus in Congress on Brexit and the ongoing chaos at Westminster and its impact on the Good Friday Agreement.
“I reiterated to the Friends of Ireland the need for support for the Withdrawal Agreement and backstop as the bare minimum needed to protect our interests and to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.
“I also briefed the group on the need to establish a forum to examine the future of Ireland after Brexit and Irish unity.
“The support of Irish America is crucial at this time of uncertainty. I appealed to the Caucus to continue to stand by Ireland, by our agreements and against the Tory Brexit agenda.”
