United voice essential to progress on fair price for farmers
Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson, Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew and South Down MLA Caitriona Ruane will join the Farmers for Action Protest at Stormont today, Monday 17th October 2005, at 1pm.
Speaking ahead of the protest Ms Gildernew said:
"A united voice across the farming community is essential in achieving a fair price for farmers at the farmgate.
"The situation for beef farmers is unsustainable. Farmers are being left at the mercy of supermarkets.
"Farmers For Action have been taking part in protests for many weeks about beef prices outside supermarkets. I welcome the fact that they have brought together farming organisations from right across the island to collectively demand action.
"Unity among farmers, in coming together to fight for each other, cannot be ignored.
"Farming as an industry employs, directly and indirectly, some 80,000 people and it is vital that there is a response of government that can start to off-set and reverse the damage caused by falling prices.
"The crisis facing farming and our rural communities underlines the urgent need to get the Assembly back up and running.
"The swift implementation of an all island animal and plant health policy is essential in opening up the potential of all-Ireland trade in animals which is vital to the future of the agricultural industry." ENDS
