SDLP need to explain their failure to defend funding for the Heart of the Glens Festival
Sinn Féin Council candidate for the Glens area Oliver McMullan has called on the SDLP to explain their vote at the Leisure and Development Committee earlier this month relating to event funding for the Heart of the Glens Festival.
Oliver McMullan said:
“The SDLP effectively gave up on the Heart of the Glens Festival securing event funding when they failed to oppose the proposed funding allocation which excluded it.
"Sinn Féin was the only party to vote against this proposed allocation and demand a full review of the proposal from council officials.
"The SDLP's failure to defend the festival is a matter of public record as Sinn Féin councillors requested a recorded vote.
"If Sinn Féin followed the SDLP example and allowed the proposal to progress through Committee there would have been no opportunity for officers to review those applications which were rejected – including the Heart of the Glens Festival – before the full council meets at the end of the month.
"While the SDLP sat on their hands last week, my Sinn Féin colleagues challenged the proposed allocation vociferously - which has now resulted in officers being forced to go back and prepare options for the full council meeting next week, to ensure this festival does receive funding.
"The assertion from the SDLP that they would allow the proposed funding – which excluded the Heart of the Glens Festival – to pass through committee stage only to challenge it belatedly at council, is farcical.
"Councillor McKillop needs to explain the failure of other SDLP committee members to stand up for the Heart of the Glens Festival in her absence at the meeting."
