Maxwell slams DUP comments on Great Hunger
Sinn Féin’s Kieran Maxwell has expressed disappointment at comments made by the DUP MLA Alex Easton today in relation to the famine in Ireland.
The North Down representative said:
“The 1847 Irish famine - in which millions of people from all communities across Ireland died of starvation - is not a topic of humour or a matter for political point scoring.
“Newtownards hospital is located on the site of a famine workhouse and An Gorta Mór, the Great Hunger, didn’t discriminate in the people who died or were forced to emigrate.
“Comments made by the DUP’s Alex Easton on social media are disgraceful and clearly demonstrates a lack of leadership— instead of standing in solidarity with the victims, he chose to mock a disaster which reduced the size of Ulster by 340,000.
“When is the DUP leadership ever going to take action other than referring these instances of disrespect to its officer Board.
“North Down Sinn Féin have excellent relations with other parties, including unionist parties, in our constituency — comments like this do nothing to strengthen community relations.”
