Sinn Féin MEPs to brief President of European Parliament regarding peace process
Sinn Féin MEPs Mary Lou McDonald and Bairbre de Brún will tomorrow (19.10.05) meet with the President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell in Brussels at 4.00pm (5.00pm Brussels).
The meeting is an opportunity to brief Mr Borrell on the potential for the peace process in light of the IRA initiative of September 28th.
Speaking today Mary Lou McDonald said:
"Tomorrow's meeting will be an opportunity to thank those within the European institutions for their continued support for the Irish peace process, both politically and financially. The practical support given by many people outside of Ireland has been integral to the ongoing process of conflict resolution.
"We will ask Mr Borrell, on behalf of the European Parliament to continue its support. In particular, we will impress upon Mr Borrell the need for a PEACE III programme covering the period 2007-2013.
" The recent IRA initiatives do not in themselves solve the crisis in the peace process. That will require both dialogue and political will particularly from the two governments and the DUP.
" Sinn Féin are absolutely committed to seeing the peace process advanced in the time ahead. We are committed to engaging in an intensive effort to see the political institutions re-established and the other outstanding matters acted upon.
" We are also engaged in an effort to brief as wide a range of international opinion on the possibilities which now exist to make substantial political progress and secure support for these efforts. Martin McGuinness has recently returned from the USA and Canada, while Gerry Adams has embarked on a series of meetings with the ANC and others in South Africa. Tomorrows meeting with President Borrell is an extension of this important work."ENDS
