Sinn Féin criticise Electoral Office over online registration failures
Sinn Féin Local Government candidate Leanne Peacock has hit out at the Electoral Office following a week of 'chaos' on the voter registration website.
The Causeway Coast and Glens Council candidate said:
"I have had many local people in contact with me over the past week who have been attempting to register to vote only to find the website was down for 'scheduled maintenance'. This has happened on multiple occasions and is clearly denying people their democratic right to register and subsequently vote. Five weeks out from the scheduled Council election this is simply not good enough."
"It is the responsibility of the Electoral Office to enable citizens to access their right to vote. The online registration website is one of the main ways to do so and has been used by approximately 75% of all those registering to vote over the past number of months. I have to question why so much planned maintenance is taking place just weeks from an election that has been scheduled for years.
"I have submitted a formal complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer and encourage anyone who needs to register to vote for the up and is having issues with the website to contact myself or indeed the Electoral Office themselves."
