Government have no Plan B for Broadband – Stanley
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Communications Brian Stanley TD has said that the Government is completely tied to one private company now for the delivery of broadband to 542,000 homes and businesses, and they will have all the bargaining power, not the Government.
The Laois-Offaly TD said:
“I asked the Minister again last week if his Government has a Plan B to deliver broadband to over half a million homes and businesses if the current process fails. With only one bidder now left, Government have completely tied themselves this this entity and have no other options.
“As far back as 2012, Sinn Féin proposed using the state owned infrastructure of the ESB for the roll-out of the National Broadband Plan. This is going to virtually every single home in the State and is already being used by the ESB to supply broadband. With this we also have the ‘MAN’s’ infrastructure which covers 94 regional towns criss-crossing the State, this is also State owned and could be used.
“This seems to have been ignored. Instead of having this in State hands and using what we already have in place, this Government instead has shown only interest in a privatised model, where costs seem to have wholly spiralled upward with no control, and where we still do not have a date to when broadband will be delivered to rural Ireland where it is vitally needed.”
