Disability campaigner wins fight for accessible bus to her college - Martin Kenny TD
Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon and South Donegal Martin Kenny has congratulated disability campaigner Victoria Matthews on winning her case for an accessible bus on her route from Donegal to Sligo IT, where she is a student.
Victoria, who uses a wheelchair, had collected thousands of signatures and lobbied her local elected representatives, including Martin Kenny, on the issue. She was unable to continue her studies when the accessible bus was taken off the route.
Deputy Kenny said:
"I was delighted to get a call from Vicky this evening to tell me that the Accessibility Officer at Bus Éireann had contacted her to say that from August next, a wheelchair accessible bus will be on the route 480.
"This runs from Donegal to Sligo, with stops in Laghey, Ballintra, Ballyshannon, Finner, Bundoran, Tullaghan Cross, Cliffoney, Grange, Drumcliffe, and Rathcormac.
"I congratulate her on her determination and courage in achieving this, not only for herself, but for all wheelchair users in the North-West. This is not the only route which will benefit, but the entire new Bus Éireann fleet will be accessible.
"Let's hope this is only the start of achieving a totally accessible fleet covering the whole of Ireland.
"Accessibility is a right not a privilege and it should be the norm, not the exception."
