Gildernew welcomes progress on inclusion of Dunmurry families
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has welcomed the news that families of past residents will be included in the Reference Group as part of the review of the response to ill-treatment in Dunmurry Manor Care Home.
Speaking after it emerged that the CPEA — the organisation tasked with the independent review — expanded the membership of the Reference Group, the party's spokesperson on Carers commented:
”I welcome the CPEA's decision to include families of those residents who were failed by Dunmurry Manor Care Home.
"This will allow families to input into the approach taken by CPEA in identifying how the system failed to prevent and respond to the lack of care in the home.
"We have been consistently raising with CPEA and the department the genuine concerns these families had that they were not being fully engaged in the process.
"We have also been seeking a meeting for families with the Department of Health to communicate the sensitivities needed around family involvement in the review process and to ensure that involvement is meaningful and productive.
"Despite the delay I welcome the Permanent Secretary's response to me expressing his willingness to meet with these families.
"The recent developments from the CPEA and the Department of Health are positive steps forward on what we hope will be an inclusive and transparent process."
