HSE cutting Cork waiting lists with disgraceful numbers fiddle - Pat Buckley TD

5 April, 2019 - by Pat Buckley TD

Sinn Fein TD for Cork East Pat Buckley has blasted the HSE in the county for engaging in what he described as a “disgraceful numbers fiddle” in order to cut waiting list for appointments.

Teachta Buckley was responding to news that 8,000 people had been cut from waiting lists in Cork by the HSE after they failed to return a confirm that they still required an appointment within just 7 days.

Deputy Buckley said:

“This is utterly unethical and unacceptable. Here we have a service, which is supposed to be providing healthcare to the people, is seeking to cut waiting lists without any improvement to access is a disgrace.

"Those responsible should be held to account.

"These people on waiting lists are being removed without any consideration for the damage it may do to them. There is no excuse.

"If a year ago you were deemed to require an appointment for orthopedics, dermatology, pain relief, and plastic surgery, then there is no reason to believe a year of waiting has cured you of that need.

"This was a deeply cynical act. I am calling on the Minister to act to stop this practice and for those responsible to admit this was wrong and to cease this practice.

"All those removed should be offered to be replaced on waiting lists and restored to a place on the list fitting to the already protracted wait they have endured.”
