Eoin Ó Broin TD welcomes publication of election study report
Teachta Ó Broin said:
“The Committee heard from a number of stakeholders who stressed the importance of conducting a permanent election study, to understand the electorate and ultimately increase participation in the democratic process.
“Dr. Theresa Reidy, Professor David Farrell and Dr. Jane Suiter from The National Electoral and Referendum Study appeared before the Committee and highlighted how most other democracies fund election studies.
"They also talked about how unfortunately in this State since the crash in 2008 the funding has been ad hoc and insufficient.
“No funding has ever been provided on a permanent basis for referendum research which is important given the recent historical referendums results and the number of referendums coming down the track.
“One of the key recommendations is that electoral and referenda studies should be publicly funded, and the funds should be permanently ring-fenced for this purpose.
“Furthermore, for the next General Election, its recommends that a funding line be established for electoral research until an Electoral Commission is established.
“The recommendations in the report are sensible and should be progressed as quickly as possible."
