Time for all political parties to stand up for Irish Neutrality – Ní Riada
Speaking ahead of the Sinn Féin motion this evening in the Dáil, MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada has called on all political parties to stand up for Irish Neutrality by supporting the party's call for a referendum.
Ms Ní Riada said;
“The surest and best way to protect Irish Neutrality is to have it enshrined in the Constitution.
“Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of the Irish people support neutrality, successive governments have allowed this principle to significantly eroded.
“Furthermore, the push for the establishment of an EU army is intensifying all the time as European leaders such as Macron, Merkel and Juncker push this agenda at the highest levels.
“The issue of neutrality is particularly significant in Ireland South given how Shannon Airport has been used effectively as forward military base for the US military.
“It is clear that Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour cannot be trusted to protect our Neutrality – they blindly follow the path of EU militarisation and have voted against a referendum on this issue in the past.
“In the recent past, Fine Gael’s four MEPs dropped the party’s pretence of supporting neutrality completely and called for its abandonment. This shows why we must now act to defend and reinforce Ireland’s neutral position.
“Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have also supported Ireland joining PESCO and for significant funds from the EU budget to be allocated to military spending.
“Given the deepening of the militarisation of the European Union, it is important that anybody elected to the European Parliament in May does not follow suit. Irish MEPs should stand up for Irish Neutrality.
“I am calling on all TDs to back our neutrality and support the Sinn Féin PMB this evening.”
