Record trolley figures show Fine Gael's frightening contempt for public healthcare - Liadh Ní Riada MEP
Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada said figures from the INMO this morning which show 631 patients on trolleys in hospitals throughout the state reflect "Fine Gael's frightening contempt for public healthcare."
Commenting from County Wexford this afternoon, Ms Ni Riada said;
"The chaos in our health service rumbles on. Now, in April, we have the highest figure for patients waiting on trolleys so far this year. This hasn't happened out of the blue. Minister Harris would have seen this coming as figures have been steadily increasing week on week.
"Patients in my constituency of Ireland South are acutely affected with University Hospital Limerick and Cork University Hospital amongst the worst affected hospitals today.
"Fine Gael have had the best part a decade to sort out the crisis in our hospitals. Not only have they failed but they have focused on implementing policies based on cuts, underfunding, slashing frontline staff and enforcing recruitment freezes. They have made things far worse.
"Only this week, Minister Harris once again threatened to suspend recruitment of staff and to ban overtime.
"It is abundantly clear that Fine Gael is not for robust, accessible public healthcare. It is quite the opposite. Fine Gael, supported by Fianna Fáil, has consistently pushed a privatisation agenda which has made it harder and harder for ordinary people to get the treatment they need. We are seeing the fruits of that toxic agenda again today."
