No room for spectator politics in Children’s Hospital Fiasco – McDonald

10 April, 2019 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has called for accountability for the massive overspend at the National Children’s Hospital.

Teachta McDonald described the government as acting as spectators and commentators rather than living up to their responsibilities.

Speaking in the Dáil, the Dublin Central TD said:

“There is no room for spectator politics here. The Government cannot collectively shrug their shoulders when it comes to over half a billion euro of hardworking taxpayers’ money.

“This is public money and we need to deal in facts. The fact is this was an overspend on an epic scale and not simply an ‘underestimation’ of costs as the government would have us believe.

“This cannot just be business as usual. The fact is our entire health service is in chaos. We have ‘Status Black’ incidents in our hospitals, where A&Es are effectively closed down, the trolley crisis is getting worse every day, and thousands are on growing waiting lists.

“The Minister for Health is the author of this fiasco.

“It is well past time we had some accountability.

“It is the Minister’s incompetence that created this shambles and, if he remains in office, hard-earned taxpayers’ money will continue to be squandered.

“This entire episode shows a government which is more interested in cutting ribbons than protecting taxpayers’ money.

“The public will not accept anything less than full accountability and government attempts to spin their way out of this mess are as transparent as they are dishonest.”
