British Government must use extension to ratify the Withdrawal Agreement – Mary Lou McDonald
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has this morning responded to news that the EU Council has agreed to a further Brexit extension for the British government.
Teachta McDonald said:
“Brexit is a disastrous policy made worse by the refusal of the British Government to recognise it’s impact on Ireland and their responsibilities under the Good Friday Agreement.
"The approach by the British government has created delay, uncertainty and instability.
"Our citizens and the all-Ireland economy require certainty and stability. This extension must ensure that the rights of citizens are protected; agreements are honoured and that there is no hardening of the border.
"The British government must use this extension to ratify the Withdrawal agreement and the minimal protections of the Backstop.
"This extension until October 31st means it is even more likely that there will be a European election in the North in May. This will give the people a chance to have their say. It will give them a chance to oppose the Tory/DUP Brexit and vote for the Sinn Féin candidate.
"Never again can a British government have the power to impose a border across Ireland and act against the wishes of the people. Now is the time to look to the future and to begin to plan for a unity referendum in line with the Good Friday Agreement."
