Onus on everyone to call out online abuse - Campbell

12 April, 2019 - by Mary Ellen Campbell

Sinn Féin Councillor Mary Ellen Campbell has said everyone has an onus to call out homophobic, sexist and other discriminatory social media posts.

Councillor Campbell was speaking after reporting a number homophobic and sexist posts to Twitter.

Mary Ellen Campbell said:

“I have reported a number of shocking homophobic and sexist posts to Twitter.

“These type of posts will not deter me from being a voice for equality and providing representation to the entire community.

“Social media has opened up huge opportunities for millions of people and transformed how people communicate, but there are clear instances where it has been abused.

“Like any form of bullying, online abuse can have a devastating and cruel impact on the victim.

“We all have a duty to call and report online abuse. Social media and website providers also have a responsibility to ensure that users are protected online.”
