Beattie slams ‘bile from Bunting’

12 April, 2019 - by Ciarán Beattie

Independent unionist candidate Jolene Bunting is injecting ‘ill-informed bile’ into the local government election campaign in a bid to stir up hatred and community tension, Sinn Féin Councillor Ciaran Beattie has said.

Cllr Beattie was speaking after the Court Ward candidate posted on social media claiming that local people were excluded from Shankill Leisure Centre in order to facilitate Muslims.

Cllr Beattie said: “This is just the latest example of Jolene Bunting injecting ill-informed bile into the election campaign.

“It is entirely irresponsible. It is wrong and the vast majority of her claims are completely untrue – they are simply a crass attempt to stir up hatred and community tension.

“Jolene Bunting’s latest intervention follows the erection of her posters throughout the Court Ward urging voters to put ‘veterans before immigrants’ and ‘local homes for local people’.

“Hers is a toxic brand of politics as we sadly witnessed throughout her time on Belfast City Council.

“This must be opposed by all right-minded citizens. There can be no place for discrimination and intolerance of any kind within our political system.”
