Sinn Féin voice in Europe needed now more than ever – O’Neill
Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill said today that the voice of Martina Anderson and the party’s All-Ireland team of MEPs is needed now more than ever across Europe.
Michelle O’Neill was speaking at a party selection convention this morning in Belfast where Martina Anderson was confirmed as the party’s candidate to contest the Six-County EU seat.
Michelle O’Neill said:
“Martina Anderson, alongside our other 3 MEPs in the rest of Ireland, has fought hard for this country’s interests at every turn – particularly on the impact of austerity and on Brexit.
“She has been a strong and effective voice for the people of Ireland.
“She has kept close to the ground throughout the past five years engaging at a constituency level more than any MEP before her, holding public meetings regularly across all of the six counties she represents.
“She is a true dynamo!
“The Sinn Féin All-Ireland team in Europe has been dogged in campaigning on behalf of the majority view in the north and successfully influencing the EU27.
“That has been reflected in the current Withdrawal Agreement and Backstop.
“No Brexit is good for Ireland but the backstop will mitigate against its worst consequences.
“The new European Parliament will be elected at a time when the EU will face many challenges, and all the while Westminster remains in paralysis and political meltdown.
“Sinn Féin has been a voice for a different Europe, a better Europe.
“We have been the voice for a social EU that respects national democracy, that works in the interests of citizens rather than corporations and that advocates peace rather than pursuing a dangerous militarisation agenda.
“That voice is needed, now more than ever across Europe.”
